The Faculty of Geology was one of the founding faculties of the Irkutsk State University.

The first graduation took place in 1920. In 1951, the faculty opened two new areas of concentration “Geological Survey, Seeking and Exploration of Minerals” and “Geology and Exploration of Oil and Gas Fields”.

Since 1994, the faculty has been educating students in the fields of “Geology” and “Geology and Exploration”. New specialties were opened in “Geology”, “Geology and Geochemistry of Fossil Fuels”, and “Geochemistry”. In 2000, the faculty started awarding the degree of Master of Geology.

Since its inception, the faculty has graduated 4685 students.

Currently, they work in geological organizations, universities and at the Research Institutes in Eastern Siberia, Western Siberia, Yakutia, Buryatiya and the Russian Far East.
